Moving in St. Charles County? Rent an Enclosed Trailer With Dollies and Blankets Included
St. Charles County is always moving. New subdivisions keep opening in Wentzville and O'Fallon, people downsize to Lake Saint Louis, and every August and May there are students moving in and out of Lindenwood and St. Charles Community College. If you have a truck that can tow, an enclosed trailer is one of the easiest ways to handle it.
Here is why our 20' Spartan enclosed trailer works so well for a move, and how to load it so everything arrives in one piece.
What comes with it
Most moving rentals charge extra for the gear. Ours comes with it:
- Moving dollies for dressers, appliances, and stacks of boxes.
- Moving blankets to wrap furniture and keep finishes from rubbing.
- E-track on the walls and floor, plus E-track straps, so you can tie off each section of the load instead of hoping it stays put.
- A rear ramp door, so you roll things in instead of lifting them up to a truck bed.
- A side entry door for grabbing that one box you need first.
- LED lights inside for those late loading sessions after work.
Why a trailer instead of a moving truck
- You drive your own vehicle. No getting used to a strange box truck on Route K or in a tight apartment lot.
- It can sit while you load. Load it over an evening, lock it overnight, and drive it in the morning.
- The ramp is easier than a lift gate. A dolly rolls right up a ramp door.
- Your belongings stay covered and locked. Rain, road spray, and nosy passers-by stay outside.
How much fits
A 20-foot enclosed trailer comfortably handles a small apartment or a large share of a bigger home, depending on how much heavy furniture you have. For a full house, many people make two trips or move the big furniture in the trailer and the boxes in their pickup bed.
Weight matters more than space. A trailer full of solid wood furniture, appliances, and book boxes gets heavy fast. Know your truck's tow rating, and if you are not sure, text us a rough list and what you are towing with.
How to load a trailer for a move
- Heaviest items go in first, up front. Appliances, dressers, and the heaviest boxes belong against the front wall. About 60 percent of the weight should sit ahead of the trailer's axles. Too little weight up front is what makes a trailer sway.
- Keep it balanced side to side. Do not put every heavy item on one wall.
- Build in sections and strap each one. Load a wall-to-wall section, run an E-track strap across it, then start the next. If you hit the brakes hard, the load moves as small blocks instead of one big slide.
- Mattresses and tabletops stand on edge along the walls, wrapped in blankets.
- Light, fragile things go on top and toward the back. Lamps, TVs in their boxes, and plants last.
- Fill gaps with soft items like pillows, bags of clothes, and blankets so nothing has room to shift.
Load the night before, close it up, and lock it. You start moving day with a loaded trailer and fresh legs, and you avoid the afternoon heat in summer.
Local moving tips
- Crossing the river? If you are moving to or from Chesterfield, Maryland Heights, or north county, the Page Avenue, Blanchette (I-70), Discovery (Route 370), and Daniel Boone (I-64) bridges all get windy. A tall enclosed trailer feels that. Slow down a little and keep both hands on the wheel.
- Avoid rush hour on I-70. Between St. Charles and Wentzville, a loaded trailer in stop-and-go traffic is stressful. Mid-morning and early afternoon are much easier.
- Check your HOA. Many newer subdivisions in O'Fallon, Wentzville, and Dardenne Prairie limit trailers parked in driveways or on the street. Plan your rental window so the trailer is not sitting there longer than allowed.
- College moves: Lindenwood move-in and end-of-semester weekends are busy for us. Book early if your dates line up with them. The same goes for students heading to Mizzou in Columbia, about an hour and a half west on I-70.
- End of the month is busy. Leases turn over on the 1st. Reserve a week or two ahead if you can.
